Smith Named to Jamaican U18 Invitational
Following the cancellation of the NACAC U18 Championships, which were to act as trails for the Youth Olympic Games, Athletics Canada has partnered with the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association to provide an opportunity for elite Canadian youth athletes to compete in a high calibre competition as part of the selection process.
HaliFAST’s very own Maggie Smith has been named to the group of athletes that will travel to Kingston, Jamaica at the end of the month as part of the invitational that will involve many of the countries that would have been at the NACAC Championships.
Smith will spend Canada day representing her country in the 800m after posting a provincial record breaking time of 2:08.47 during a trip to Waltham, MA. Most recently, Smith had a spectacular performance at the NSSAF provincial championships, collecting three gold medals across the distance events and shattering provincial records in both the 1500m and 3000m races.
Also named as a Team Coach is HaliFAST head coach Rich Lehman after being previously named to the NACAC U18 team.
Hoping to impress in her first stint on a national team, Smith will be using this meet to fight for a place on the Youth Olympic Games team that will compete with the best in the world in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October.
